Coconut Tree Hill Mirissa – The Beautiful Palm Tree Dome

Coconut Tree Hill is a beautiful hill perched into the Indian Ocean lined with sky high palm trees overlooking the Mirissa bay. Presumably one of the more well-known hotspots of Mirissa, locals and tourists alike flock to this gorgeous hill to catch a sunrise, or sunset, all while staring out into the vast ocean before it.

HOW TO GET TO COCONUT TREE HILL

Coconut Tree Hill is located just 15-20-minutes east (when looking at a map) from Mirissa beach, this little spot is just down the road and can be reached in a couple different ways. The first is to head to Mirissa Beach, and walk along the shoreline, walking passed Parrot Rock, and the 2 bays beyond it until you reach the hill.
The 2nd way would be to head to the street (Matara Rd) from Mirissa Beach and just walk east until you reach Beach Rd. Turn into the road, head towards the beach and you’ll immediately see it to your left (When staring out into the water). For reference point, Beach Rd can be found between Jeremy Backpacker Hostel and the Spring Resort (both found on Google maps) and facing Esprit D’Ici and Triple O’Six.
You can also reach the hill through Bandaramulla temple which has a path that leads to the beach, and you’ll have to walk to your left (when facing the water).
If you can’t find it with these indications, you were never meant to visit it in the first place!!… just kidding, Coconut Tree Hill is a must do if you’re traveling through Mirissa and was one of our favorite spots to catch a Sri Lankan Sunrise.

BEST TIME TO VISIT COCONUT TREE HILL

The best time to visit Coconut Tree Hill would be in the morning… and by morning, we mean sunrise. And by sunrise, we mean get there for 5:30am, set up shop and wait for the beautiful sun rays to blast through the Coconut Trees and cast wonderful shadows over the hill.

WHAT TO EXPECT

You’re bound to make some friends at Coconut Tree Hill. But not just the human kind, the furry, fluffy and friendly kind! Numerous stray dogs just looking for some companionship hang around Coconut Tree Hill looking for someone to catch a sunrise with.
The proximity to Parrot Rock also makes this destination great as you can easily explore both locations in the same morning. Parrot Rock can easily be seen from Coconut Tree Hill and vice-versa.

We experienced a beautiful sunrise at Coconut Tree Hill. We showed up around 5:30-5:45am and saw but one other couple setting up for the gorgeous sunrise we were about to experience. A cute little friend decided to tag along for the ride, and we soaked in some rays with our new-found friend. Surfers were catching some morning waves in the near distance as Mirissa is also a known hotspot for surfers, as the waves are perfect for beginners and moderately experience surfers alike.

All in all, this is one spot we recommend you visit if you’re swinging through Mirrissa, Sri Lanka. Don’t forget to also check out Parrot Rock which is a 10 minute walk from Coconut Tree Hill.
